My big boy is 22 months old! How can this be!? Let’s not talk about how he will be two in two months…
Two big things happened this month for Xander: he’s had to learn to be a big brother and his communication is blowing up!! Since I’ve talked a bit about Xander’s adjustment in Lincoln’s one month update, we’ll talk about the other fun things in this post! First up – communication! It’s getting difficult to keep track of all the new signs and words Xander is learning. But here’s what I’ve come up with this month:
- New signs: crab, kangaroo, camel, crocodile, rhino, hippo, whale, tiger, zebra, gorilla, lion, octopus, star, color, good, goodnight, cry, yellow, brown, orange, red, blue, green, white, outside, house, game, police, and the following letters: A-J, L, M, O, R, X, Z
- New words: battery, more, shake, baby, outside, memo, cake, light, star, mommy, Lincoln, signing time, chocolate, doctors
Xander is signing phrases which is fascinating to watch. For example he will sign: bird home tree. He’s connecting what the signs mean in the correct way! He also has become more open to repeating words that we say to him – he’s testing out his verbal skills more and more and we love it! He now mainly calls me mommy (or mommies – it’s so cute) instead of mama. John is still dada though – not daddy.
For Christmas Xander received quite a few new Signing Time DVD’s and he soaks up the knowledge in a snap. John and I have to watch the DVD intently because often Xander will learn the signs after just one viewing. Sometimes it makes me feel so pressured! Haha. Seriously though, if you are going to sign with your kid, it’s a big commitment because you are essentially teaching yourself (and thus your whole family) a new language.
Moving on from communication, Xander is definitely a full on toddler. He’s testing boundaries, throws things when he knows he shouldn’t, screams sometimes just because, throws food on the floor, throws himself onto the floor in an upset manner, and has visited the time out step more this month than any one! As I type this, it makes me think I’m making him to sound like a bad boy, but he really isn’t and is just figuring out limits as well as adjusting to life with a baby brother around. Xander also gives the most amazing hugs and will relish in hugging me anytime I’m not holding Lincoln. It truly is the best. He’s been giving us a run for our money during bedtime and we are trying some new techniques that I hope to discuss next month (assuming they work!)
All in all this month has been filled with many emotions for all of us! We’re getting into the swing of being a family of four and there is something to learn from each day. We love you so much Xander – you made me and daddy parents and provided us with all our “firsts” too. <3
PS. Picmonkey (the program I use to make these images) was being cranky tonight and lost my image. So this is not the best quality and I will have to remake it when I have time in order to have a saved version that is higher quality. Blargh!
