Yesterday morning I ran in my first ever 8K! To be honest with you I wasn’t quite sure what the distance of an 8K was before this race. It’s 4.97 miles. The Jingle Bell Jog 8K is part of Montgomery County Road Runners Club (MCRRC) low-key race series. If you are a member of MCRRC this race is free and if you aren’t a member, it’s just $10!
My friend Danielle, who ran with me in the Damascus Freedom 10K, signed up for this race on a whim and was chatting with other moms in our little group about this race. I kept reading the convo and thinking that maybe I would, in fact, run it too. After a quick convo with my friend Lauren, who ran with me in the Army Ten Miler, we both decided to run it with the group of moms!
Lauren and her husband showed up to our house Sunday morning. And after a squeeze to Xander, we left the boys at home to go have some girl time!
Sunday morning ended up being rainy, so two of the moms didn’t show, but Lauren and I found Kelsey and we had a blast together! The Jingle Bell Jog 8K course ran around a residential area of Rockville. There were quite a few gradual hills, but the rain held off for the race! I was kicking myself for pinning my bib on my red outer shirt (worn because I thought it would be raining), and really wished I hasn’t been wearing it by half way though the race. Oh well, you live and learn!
The three of us stuck together the entire time and chatted the entire way. Before we started the race I mentioned that I would like to run this race in less than 11 minute miles, since both of my other postpartum races were above that. Well, ho ho ho and Merry Christmas to us… we all finished in 53:53 / 10:50 pace!
Umm girls, why is my face the only one that’s puffy?? (This is a serious question…)
I’m so excited to see that my time keeps dropping as I work on my postpartum fitness.
MCRRC really puts on a great low-key race. There were about 200 runners, so many amazing volunteers, and a huge post-race food spread. This was my first Jingle Bell race and it was so fun to see people dressed in Christmas colors, wearing santa hats, or running with bells on. Next year I’ll get a little more festive – I’m glad I at least had a red shirt!
Lauren and I said our goodbyes to Kelsey and headed home to the boys. Daddy had even made sure that Xander was dressed for the festive occasion, even though he didn’t attend the race. How sweet 🙂
Oh and I forgot to mention such a cool thing about MCRRC! You can join the group for $35 for the entire year! So if you participate in 4 of the free low-key races then that more than covers the group fee! I’m so so excited to join – they even do group runs together too. I can feel that 2013 is going to be such a fun racing year! Thank you Lauren and Kelsey for making this such a fun race!
Did you race this past weekend? Have you ever done a Jingle Bell Jog?
